Actos (Pioglitazone)
Pioglitazone, more commonly known as Actos, is a drug prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes. It is manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America Inc. and is used to control blood sugar along with diet and exercise. Pioglitazone is sold alone or in combination with metformin (Actoplus Met, Actoplus Met XR) and glimepiride (Duetact).
FDA Warning: Actos causes increased risk of bladder cancer
On June 15, 2011, five days after Germany and France pulled Actos from the shelves, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning. They informed the public that use of the diabetes medication Actos (pioglitazone) for more than one year may be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. They also stated that information about this risk would be added to the Warnings and Precautions section of the label for pioglitazone-containing medicines.
Possible signs or symptoms of bladder cancer from Actos may include:
• Blood in your urine
• Feeling the need to urinate but not being able
• Frequent urination
• Pain during urination
Actos Lawsuits
