Sadly Depuy has been the source of more than on recall on knee replacement technology. Over the past two decades multiple issues have caused the company to backtrack on their products. The following is a list of the important recalls and warnings:

1990 – A recall was issued on knee replacement models due to issues with the Hylamer Polyethylene Bearing Surface.

2001 – The British Government’s Medical Devices Agency issued a recall on Hylamer based knee replacements due to an inordinate number of failed installations. It was discovered that the sterilization process made the units brittle and highly likely to break down.

2008 – A recall was issued on LCS Knee Implant-Meniscal bearing inserts. The 10mm products were mislabeled as 12.5mm, causing significant sizing and discomfort issues in patients.

2009 – The LCS Duofix Femoral Component received a recall. The FDA had rejected this item in the United States, but globally it was put in use and was discovered to cause excessive revision surgeries after installation.

2010 – Depuy received a strict warning from the FDA regarding their TruMatch Personalized Solutions System and the Corail Hip System. It was stated that Depuy misused expedited approval methodologies to push their units to market without proper testing and approval. The marketing and sales of the items were considered illegal.

Injuries as a Result of Depuy Knee Replacements

Throughout the various recalls the true victims were inevitably the patients receiving the replacements. Some individuals experienced pain and swelling in nearby ligaments as well as unusual knee buckling and hyper-mobility. This surgery was often costly, painful, and time consuming.
