You can’t turn on the evening news without hearing about a horrendous fire. Often these fires result in the tragic deaths of older couples, young children and firefighters. Those who receive burns but survive are in for what can only be described as hell on earth.

You come home from work and prop your feet up to watch the evening news. A story comes on about a young boy who was killed while visiting a friend. The friend’s father had a gun which wasn’t locked up. The friend is heartbroken. He didn’t mean for this to happen. They were playing and “BANG”, the gun went off. The young boy fell to the ground! It was all so quick!
How many times have you seen similar stories on television? Too many, I would guess. A senseless loss all because a gun was left where children could find it. What do the parents of the young boy do? They probably didn’t have life insurance on their son. Everyone knows you don’t need life insurance on children. They are supposed to grow up, go to college, get married and live a long, healthy life. But these parents need to pay for a funeral and funerals are not cheap.

I think it is a fair assumption to say that most people who smoke wish they had never started. Unfortunately, it is a very rare occasion to quit smoking on the first attempt. I personally know of a woman who used cigarettes as a weight loss tool. She died of emphysema at the age of 57. The woman was my mother-in-law. Not only is smoking debilitating to your health, it is just downright expensive.
It is no wonder that the public was excited when Pfizer introduced Chantix and received approval by the F.D.A. in May, 2006 as a smoking cessation drug. Here was medication that promised them freedom from their dependence on cigarettes. Sadly, it didn’t take long to discover that Chantix had some potentially tragic side effects.
The United States Food and Drug Administration issued an Early Communication to the public and health care providers on November 20, 2007 that they were evaluating “…adverse event reports on Chantix related to changes in behavior, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal ideation, and actual suicidal behavior…” Tragically, this announcement came too late for some.
As I have said, I have seen the powerful grip that cigarettes can have and the desperation to break free. I have also spoken to individuals who have taken Chantix and have experienced its heartbreaking effects.
