New DUI Law Affects Four California Counties Starting July 1
June 18, 2010
Starting on July 1, 2010, convicted drunk drivers in Los Angeles, Sacramento, Tulare, and Alameda counties will have to install ignition interlock devices in their vehicles. According to a CBS News report, the ignition interlock devices (IID’s) will require DUI offenders to test their breath for alcohol before they can start their vehicle.
The new program will be monitored by the legislature and evaluated in 2016. If the program is successful the new law may be expanded to the entire state.
Under the new program’s requirement, a first time DUI offender will use the IID system for five months to a year. If the person becomes a repeat offender the driver will be required to use the device for a full year. That will increase to two years for a third drunk driving offense.
According to state figures, 30 percent of all California roadway deaths involved at least one drunken driver. So far, 14 states have this IID law in place and experienced positive results.
If you or a loved one has been involved in a drunken driving accident it is important to contact an experienced California attorney. If you have been injured a skilled California personal injury lawyer can help you obtain a fair settlement. The best attorneys will even offer free consultations to injured accident victims.
