RIDGE, N.Y. (AP) — A Long Island man faces charges of driving while intoxicated after police say he drove the wrong way and collided headed-on with a car driven by an off-duty police officer.

Police say Francisco Tomas of Riverhead was driving on Middle Country Road in Ridge when he struck the other car.

The officer was in stable condition following the Saturday accident. He suffered a fractured sternum and a minor head injury. Tomas also was taken to the hospital with a severe ankle injury and a broken leg.

According to Newsday, police said the charges could be upgraded pending results of a court-ordered blood test.

It was not immediately clear if the 26-year-old Tomas had a lawyer.
