LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz.—

Sheriff’s officials say an Illinois couple who were thrown from a boat on Arizona’s Lake Havasu is missing but presumed drowned.

Authorities say the operator of a 28-foot deck boat made an abrupt turn while traveling at 70 or 80 mph Friday evening. Mohave County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Trish Carter says witnesses saw the boat make an erratic turn just before it rolled four or five times. Both couples on board went overboard, but one couple — also from Illinois — was rescued and suffered just minor injuries.

Carter said Saturday that the speed and sudden turn could’ve both been the result of a mechanical error on the boat. She says several agencies were searching for the missing man and woman, who she didn’t name.
