Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella

The popular birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin are contraceptives that are manufactured by Bayer Healthcare.  These pills have been linked to serious and potentially life threatening side effects in women.  Yaz and Yasmin along with the generic version, Ocella, contain a type of progestin called drospirenone which has been considered the cause of these side effects.

Recently a number of lawsuits have been filed throughout the United States alleging that Bayer failed to warn the public about the serious side effects.  Bayer’s advertising of these products was misleading consumers because it exaggerated claims about the effectiveness of the drugs and minimized the risk.

Potential Negative Effects of Yaz Use

The side effects of Yaz are what users should be particularly cautious of. The following are examples of the most prominent negative results that have occurred in some women who use Yaz:

  • Blood Clots. The combination of Progestin and Estrogen utilized in medicines like Yaz and other birth controls can cause the clotting of blood over time. These clots form in the veins or arteries of the body, and are increased significantly in women who smoke.
  • Pulmonary Embolism. This risk is related to blood clots, but is specific to blood flow being blocked come in and out of the lungs. Risk for Pulmonary Embolism increases in women who smoke, who are older than 35, and who have a family history of Embolism.
  • Stroke. Stroke occurs when an insufficient amount of blood is getting to the brain. The likelihood of stroke is increased in women who are over 35, smoke, have high blood pressure or cholesterol, or who have diabetes.
  • Heart Attack.  Two hormones in Yaz products, drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol, result in an increase in risk of heart attack for some women.

Other risks associated with the drug include cardiac arrhythmias, deep vein  thrombosis, gallbladder disease, and even death.
