Zocor (Simvastatin)
Simvastatin, more commonly known as Zocor, is in a group of drugs called statins. It is used to reduce levels of “bad” cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL) and triglycerides in the blood, while increasing levels of “good” cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL).
Zocor is also used to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other heart complications in people with diabetes, coronary heart disease, or other risk factors
FDA Warning: Zocor Linked To Muscle Injuries
On June 8, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced safety label changes for the cholesterol-lowering medication simvastatin (Zocor). It has been discovered that Simvastatin at 80 mg doses was associated with muscle injury or myopathy. Simvastatin is sold under the brand-name Zocor as a single-ingredient generic product. It is also sold in combination with other drugs as Vytorin and Simcor.
The most common side effects of Zocor include muscle pain, tenderness and weakness. However, more serious side effects including muscle damage that can lead to liver disease and kidney failure were also discovered. According to FDA research 5 out of every 100,000 people taking Zocor for a year experienced these effects.
Zocor Lawsuits
The manufacturer of Simvastatin had the duty to adequately warn patients of the dangerous side effects of the drug and their failure to do so is the basis of the Zocor lawsuits.
